Race for Space

As the race for supremacy on earth reached a fever pitch during the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union moved their competition even further up — into space that is. The Space Race began with the Soviet launch of the Sputnik 1, an artificial satellite, in October 1957. Being the first to explore space became a mission for the Cold War rivals and much money was spent during the ensuing years on research and education.
